Press the button and this random Disney movie generator deals five films included with a Disney+ subscription in the US right now. Worth knowing before your first spin: the pool is the whole Disney+ catalogue, so Pixar and the animated classics sit alongside Marvel, Star Wars and the Fox library. If you came for the animated ones, set the genre filter to animation or family and spin from there. Either way, every random Disney movie it deals is watchable tonight without renting anything.

01 · How it works

How the Random Disney Movie Generator Works

The box at the top of this page is the random Disney movie generator. It behaves exactly like the general random movie generator with one condition welded on: the draw is narrowed to the Disney+ US catalogue before any randomness happens, so there is no such thing as an unlucky spin that lands outside it.

  1. Add filters, or don’t. Genre, decade, minimum rating and length are all optional and all apply on top of the platform lock. Genre is the one that matters most here — see the section below.
  2. Press the button. Five random Disney movie picks come back at once with year, runtime, genres and audience rating lined up for comparison. Open any row for the poster and a short synopsis.
  3. Keep one, or draw five more. The previous round drops into a strip below, so a film you nearly chose is still reachable after the next five disappoint.

“On Disney+” here means included with the subscription. Nothing you would have to rent or buy separately enters the pool, which is the entire point of a platform-locked generator — a title you have to pay extra for is not an answer to “what do we put on tonight”.

The draw behind this random Disney movie generator is uniform. Each press counts the Disney+ films matching your filters, picks a random position inside that count and returns whatever sits there, so every title in the filtered pool has an identical chance every time. Within a session it also leaves out what it has already shown you — worth having when a genre filter cuts the pool to a couple of hundred films, which on this page it usually does.

02 · The pool

What Is Actually in the Disney+ Pool

482 films, and the composition will surprise you if you came here thinking of Disney as a studio rather than a service. Sort the pool by how many people have rated each film and the top of it is largely Marvel — Avengers, Iron Man, the Spider-Man films, Logan, Deadpool 2 — with Pixar mixed in.

That is not a fault in the draw. Disney+ carries Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and the 20th Century Fox library, and a platform-locked generator draws from the platform. But it does mean the phrase “random Disney movie” means two different things depending on who is asking, and only one of them is a genre away.

Animation — 158 films
Pixar and the hand-drawn back catalogue, as far as Disney+ still streams them in the US.
Family — 189 films
Overlaps animation heavily but adds the live-action side: the remakes, the sports films, the ones with a dog on the poster.
Animation or family — 254 distinct films
Just over half the pool, and the closest this data gets to “a Disney film” in the sense most people mean. There is no studio field to filter on, so this is an approximation by genre rather than an exact answer.
Released before 1990 — 61 films
Smaller than the archive suggests, because Disney+ does not stream everything Disney has ever made. Films missing here are usually missing from the service, not filtered out.

For scale, Disney+ carries around 490 films in the US against Netflix’s 1,090, so this is a small pool by design and a deep one by reputation. A small pool has one practical consequence worth knowing: with a genre filter on, repeated spins start showing you the same titles sooner than they would on the main generator — a random Disney movie generator simply recycles faster than one drawing from thirteen thousand films.

03 · Film night

Running a Family Film Night

The reason to hand this decision to a random Disney movie generator is not that nobody has an opinion. It is that everybody does, and the opinions do not converge. A draw nobody chose is easier for a room to accept than a suggestion one person made.

A sequence that works: set genre to animation or family first, then set length before anyone sees a title. Bedtime is the real constraint and it is far easier to agree on “under 90 minutes” in the abstract than to talk someone out of a two-hour film they have already fallen for. Then spin once, and let each person strike one title until one is left.

Give the youngest person the first strike. It costs nothing — the draw is uniform, so the remaining films are no worse than the removed one — and it converts the person most likely to object into the person with the most influence, before there is anything to object to.

One limit to be clear about, because it matters more on this page than anywhere else on the site: the minimum-rating filter is an audience score, not an age certificate. This library carries no content ratings at all, and the Disney+ pool includes plenty that is not aimed at children — Deadpool 2 and Logan are both in it. The genre filter is a reasonable proxy and it is not a guarantee. If a film is unfamiliar, open the card and read the synopsis before you press play.

Nothing is stored, and nothing is learned from what you draw. Reload the page and the random Disney movie generator has forgotten the evening entirely — which also means each film night starts from the same full pool rather than from a narrowing idea of what your household likes.

December nights have their own shortlist: the random Christmas movie generator deals only from Christmas films, and its genre filter set to animation or family turns it into the same kind of family film night.

04 · FAQ

Random Disney Movie Generator FAQ

Which films does the random Disney movie generator draw from?

Every film included with a Disney+ subscription in the United States that this site holds data for — 482 of them. That is the Disney+ catalogue as a whole, not the Walt Disney Animation back catalogue on its own, so Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and the 20th Century Fox library are all in the same pool.

Why did it give me a Marvel film?

Because Marvel is on Disney+, and the random Disney movie generator is restricted by what the service carries rather than by which studio made a film. Sorted by audience votes, roughly half of the most popular titles in the pool are Marvel. If you want the animated side specifically, set the genre filter to animation or family, which narrows the pool to 254 films.

Can it pick only the animated Disney classics?

Close, with one filter. Setting genre to animation leaves 158 films and setting it to family leaves 189; together they come to 254 distinct titles, which is where Pixar and the hand-drawn era live. There is no studio field in the data, so this is a genre approximation rather than an exact Walt Disney Animation filter — but a random Disney movie drawn from those two genres is almost always the kind you meant.

Does it include the older Disney films?

Yes, where Disney+ still carries them and the film has a poster, a synopsis and a real audience score. 61 titles in the pool were released before 1990. Some famous films are missing because Disney+ itself does not stream them in the US, not because they were filtered out here.

How current is the Disney+ availability data?

It comes from JustWatch and is refreshed periodically rather than live. Disney+ changes its catalogue less often than Netflix does, but titles still leave. If a pick is not in your Disney+ app, that is the reason — draw again.

Do I need a Disney+ account to use the random Disney movie generator?

Not to use the generator, which is free and connects to nothing. You will need a subscription to actually watch what it picks, since the whole pool is drawn from titles included with one. Nothing about you is stored either way. Read the privacy policy.
